The Opportunity

Heidi’s Village is looking for a Major Gift Officer who loves building relationships, believes fundraising begins with listening, and gets excited about connecting people with a mission that matters.

This is an opportunity for an experienced fundraiser to help shape the next chapter of a growing and evolving animal welfare organization.

Heidi’s Village is much more than a traditional animal shelter. We are a collaborative campus where rescue organizations, community partners, veterinary professionals, staff, and volunteers come together to help animals — and the people who care for them. Our work includes veterinary care, animal housing, rescue support, neonatal kitten care, adoption, and other programs designed to strengthen animal welfare throughout our community.

Every day on our campus provides a story worth telling. The Major Gift Officer will help us build relationships with people and corporate partners who want to become part of those stories.

We are looking for someone who can turn an introduction into a relationship, a relationship into a partnership, and a partnership into meaningful philanthropic investment.

What You’ll Do

The Major Gift Officer will develop and manage a portfolio of approximately 100–150 major gift donors, corporate partners, and prospects, with primary responsibility for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individuals capable of making gifts of $5,000 and above.

This is not a behind-the-desk fundraising position.

You’ll spend meaningful time getting to know donors, understanding what inspires them, introducing them to the work happening at Heidi’s Village and creating thoughtful opportunities for them to make a difference.

Build Relationships That Last

You will:

• Develop authentic, long-term relationships with donors, corporate partners, and prospective donors.
• Create individualized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies based on each donor’s and corporate partner’s interests and connection to our mission.
• Meet regularly with donors and corporate partners in person, on campus, in the community and virtually.
• Create opportunities for supporters to experience Heidi’s Village and understand the impact of their philanthropy.
• Provide thoughtful, timely and highly personalized donor stewardship.
• Help donors see not simply what their gift pays for, but what their generosity makes possible.

Grow Our Major Gift Program

You’ll actively build the future of our fundraising program by:

• Identifying and qualifying new major gift and corporate prospects.
• Developing strategies that thoughtfully move relationships through the donor engagement cycle.
• Building and maintaining a healthy, sustainable major-gift pipeline.
• Partnering with our Executive Director, Board members, community leaders, volunteers and staff to open doors and develop new relationships.
• Securing major gifts through thoughtful, donor-centered conversations.
• Meeting established fundraising and relationship-development goals.

Tell the Heidi’s Village Story

Great fundraising requires great storytelling.

You’ll work closely with the people doing the work every day — our veterinary, animal care, adoption, kitten nursery and operational teams — to understand the impact occurring throughout Heidi’s Village and translate that impact into meaningful conversations with supporters.

You should be equally comfortable having coffee with a prospective donor, walking someone through our campus, presenting an opportunity for a significant investment, or simply listening to why animal welfare matters personally to someone.

As Heidi’s Village continues to grow, this role will also participate in:

• Major fundraising campaigns and strategic initiatives.
• Donor events and community engagement opportunities.
• Planned and legacy giving conversations when appropriate.
• Development of new philanthropic relationships throughout Arizona.
• Fundraising strategy and organizational growth conversations with leadership.

Experience We’d Love to See

Our strongest candidates will bring:

• 3–5+ years of successful major gifts, development or nonprofit fundraising experience.
• A demonstrated track record of personally cultivating and securing five-figure or larger philanthropic gifts.
• Experience managing a portfolio of donors and prospects.
• Strong relationship-building, interpersonal, storytelling and presentation skills.
• Experience developing and managing a donor pipeline.
• Confidence communicating with donors, executives, board members and community leaders.
• Experience working with donor databases or CRMs; Heidi’s Village currently utilizes Bloomerang.
• The ability to translate programs, needs and outcomes into compelling philanthropic opportunities.
• A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Experience with planned giving and existing relationships within Arizona’s philanthropic community would be valuable, but neither is more important than the ability to build new relationships well.

A Different Kind of Workplace

This role is based in an active animal welfare environment — not a traditional corporate office.

One conversation might happen in an office and the next while walking a donor through our veterinary hospital, kitten nursery or animal care areas.

There will be dogs barking. There will be kittens. There will occasionally be unexpected situations requiring the campus to shift priorities.

For the right person, that isn’t a distraction from the work.

It is the reason for the work.

The position involves regular computer and phone use as well as meetings throughout the community. Occasional evening and weekend availability will be needed for donor meetings, events and organizational activities. The role may also involve standing, walking, driving, bending and occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.

Compensation & Benefits

Expected Salary Range: $85,000–$95,000 annually, depending on experience.

We are currently seeking ualified candidates for the position of Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT). This position reports to the Practice Manager in Heidi’s Village Veterinary Center in Phoenix and is available immediately.

SUMMARY: The CVT assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, immunizations, surgeries, intake/discharge of patients and inventory maintenance. This position requires a working knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, common diseases; their symptoms, means of transmission, treatment and prevention, and other basic preventative health care recommendations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Must be able to effectively communicate with and educate clients on their patient’s procedures, outcomes, medications and preventative.
• Must be familiar with operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting in house lab equipment.  Bonus if is familiar with IDEXX in house lab machines.
• Skilled in proper radiographic technique and positioning, safety protocols and regulations regarding radiation exposure.
• Strong background and knowledge of surgical procedures, maintaining a sterile environment, anesthetic induction, intubation, monitoring and recovery.  Needs to know how to operate, maintain and troubleshoot anesthetic equipment.
• Proficient in dental prophylaxis and dental radiographs
• Understands pharmaceutical drug classifications, uses, contraindication, drug calculations and conversions as well as routes of administration.
• Knowledgeable in hospital safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
• Must be familiar with isolation protocols and infectious disease transmission in a shelter setting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Certified veterinary techician in the state of Arizona preferred – years of experience as a vet tech will be considered.
• 6 months working/volunteering with domestic animals in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital, or another animal facility preferred. NOTE: Any applicable volunteer or work experience should be listed and include hours worked and job duties.
• Priority consideration will be given to candidates with 6-12 months of surgery experience.

Heidi’s Village is an innovative concept in animal welfare, providing low-cost boarding and veterinary services exclusively to community rescue organizations. Shifts available:

4x 10-hour shifts or 5x 8-hour shifts, 7 days/week
5:00am – 4:00pm, or 5:00am – 1:30pm (opening shifts)
8:00am – 7:00pm, or 10:30am – 7:00pm (closing shifts)

Position Available: Animal Care Technicians (ACTs) provide daily care and enrichment to Village residents while promoting the safety and health of all animals in our care.   

The position(s) involve:

• Caring for a wide range of (primarily) canines with strict adherence to quality/safety standards
• Handling and interacting with animals humanely and safely, using safety equipment as necessary
• Adhering to the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare and following Fear Free Principles
• Following established disease control protocols to clean, disinfect, and sanitize kennels, equipment, walkways, and common areas over nearly 3 acres of property
• Ensuring all animals are adequately exercised, housed, fed, provided with water and other basic necessities
• Recognizing and accurately/timely communicating signs of illness or behavior changes
• Creating and maintaining necessary animal records and data entry
• Cultivating positive client, volunteer, and coworker relations through professional and courteous interactions
• Promoting our vision, mission, services, programs, events, and adoptable animals
• Assisting potential adopters with meet-n-greets, facilitating interactions to ensure a safe and pleasant experience
• Communicating effectively with coworkers to ensure efficient production and deadlines are met
• Participation in continuous process improvement
• Keeping work area neat and clean and following all established safety guidelines
• Performing additional and/or general duties, as assigned

A successful candidate must possess the following skillsets, attributes, or experience:
